Examples of CLIL activities

In this entry I would like to describe a few activities which I have conducted while teaching CLIL Unit connected with healthy lifestyle. I will describe them as well as show you their role regarding 4Cs- content, cognition, communication (language) and culture. I will share with you 6 ideas from lessons I have conducted.

Lesson 1:

1. Introducing vocabulary and content- in order to do this I used presentation and video. I started with the presentation- I showed students main areas of healthy lifestyle such as nutritious food, sleeping, sport and hygiene. Of course I did not forget about making students active- I asked them questions to be sure that they understood everything. Moreover, I introduced new vocabulary using the same presentation- we drilled and mimed it. I also used the same techniques to make students familiar with the words that were included in the video about healthy lifestyle. After that we watched mentioned video.

Justification- introducing the main content and language for learning - language which is needed in order to understand the content.

2. Quiz- the aim of the quiz was to check how much of the content presented in the video and presentation learners actually remember. Each child was given two colourful circles made from paper- red and green one.

Green one =YES, red one=NO. I was reading to children yes,no questions, od they thought that sentence was true they had to put up green paper, if no red one.

Justification- formative assessment - checking what students remember so far, cognition- lower order thinking skills-recalling gained knowledge.

Lesson 2:

1. Circle map - learners where supposed to fill circle map with the content they remember so far. - different ways of healthy lifestyle. After that, each student was supposed to talk about his/her drawings and also choose the one which in his/her opinion is the most important and justify why.

Justification- cognition- recalling as well as higher order thinking skill- justifying one's opinion.

2. Posters- students had to make two posters (whole class was sitting together on the carpet). They were given big drawings of two people -one was smiling while the second one was sad. Additionally each child got a few small pictures (they were cut out by the teacher before the lesson) with things that presented healthy lifestyle or not healthy lifestyle e.g. washing hands, eating fruit or eating junk food. Their task was to stick each picture on the correct poster- with smiling face or with the sad one. After that we discussed the outcomes.

Justification- applying new knowledge (thinking skill) as well as checking the students' knowledge at that moment of CLIL Unit by providing them with the attractive activity. By the way, they were really engaged during it :)

Lesson 4:

1. Plan of healthy day - firstly children had to match the pictures with the appropriate headings e.g. I BRUSH MY TEETH. Then, they had to add appropriate hours to it. Finally, a few kids read they answers aloud - healthy day plans could have been different.

Justification- checking if students are able to use their knowledge to create the plan of healthy day. They can use their thinking skills, practice reading as well as mathematical skills.

Lesson 5:

1. Washing hands - in this activity learners were supposed to wash their hands with the special equipment regarding the rules they have learned. First I put gel on their hands, then each child had to wash hands using water and a lot of soap- while doing this they were counting to fifteen (this is how long they should have washed hands). After they had made their hands dry, I checked the results with a special torch which can show if hands are still dirty. If they were, child had to repeat the task.

Justification- kids had the opportunity to apply gained knowledge. The task was interesting for them as well as was connected with their life. Moreover they could have practiced their mathematical skills.

I hope you like my activities and I am looking forward to your comments :)

  1. I think that children had a lot of fun thanks to your activities, especially when they needed to wash their hands or while they were making posters. I am wondering how you control discipline during activities like that because I often have problems with discipline during group work or during activities in which children can move around and talk with each other.
